The Fox Island Sandspit is now owned by PenMet Parks, and is open to the public during daytime hours.
The sandspit was purchased from the Tacoma Demolay by PenMet Parks.
Many Boy Scout Eagle Service Projects contributed to the development of the park over the years; staircase to the beach, picnic areas with picnic tables, benches, trails to the parking lot and beach, remodeling of the old Demolay Clubhouse (which has since been demolished), invasive species removal, and beach cleanup among others.
On Thursday, June 23, 2011, former Washington state Senator Derek Kilmer confirmed the state funding for improvements to the sand spit were included in this year's budget:
'As chairman of the capital budget, I was pleased to include $1,267,875 in the final budget. It's an important project, and I was happy to advocate for it. Please let me know if I can ever lend a hand.'
